Scene: The Truth

Scene: a video call with a collection of people. Simon: Given what’s going on at the moment, do you think we should come clean about YATGB? Jane: You mean the truth will out? I’m not sure. Just because two high profile people have been caught lying to the population, do we need to change? Simon: Caught again or has that not been shown in law? Dave: It’s a post truth world now. You can say what you like and if someone has a pop at you, play the Cancel Card or say Fake News a lot. Jane: That or Dennis the Anti Peasant: “Help! I’m being oppressed by the little people!” Dave: Leprechauns? Jane: No, my love. The rank and […]

Family

Hi, I have held off writing this post because it concerns someone I love dearly: my son. To those of you who’ve been following this blog over the years, you may recall me writing about Wee Man and Little Miss. You may also have noticed I still refer to Wee Man, while our youngest is now Child 2.0. No doubt some of you know where I’m going with this. I feel torn writing this. On the one hand, my family life is fairly private here. On the other, as a parent, I am… so very weary at the lies, misinformation, and hatred directed at my child. My son was assigned female at birth and now they are my son. He […]

Script: The Search

Scene: a staff meeting room in a secondary school. Ru: Thank you all for coming in today and at such short notice. Colleagues at the table nod and smile. Tina: So, Ru, you said it was urgent. Liz: Sorry, I’ll just pull the curtains to. The sun’s a bit low. Sorry, Ru. Ru: All settled? Ah, yes, I did, didn’t I, say it was urgent. I, um, would like to introduce a new colleague to the team. Mr Collins. He’ll be joining us once he passes Security. There’s a knock at the door and Collins enters. Gerald: Welcome. Are you the new Drama teacher? Ru: Ah, my apologies, Mr Collins, I was just brief- Collins: My title is TransFinder Collins, […]

Yes, Prime Suspect

Hi, Do you have one of those weeks where a number of things happen? It’s felt a bit like walking through a wood, where the wildlife is making itself known. I was going to write a bit about the Trans Day of Visibility, but I think my appearance has been somewhat limited over this past two years or so, that I’m not sure I’d be saying anything new. Well, not that that usually stops me. 😉 However, there’s been two developments around trans matters this week that have… irked me. One, perhaps like much in life, leads into the second. This week sees the release of a survey from Galop, an anti-abuse charity, and they report that nearly a third […]

Scribbles

Hi, Two posts in a week. Well, quantity even if not quality eh? 😉 Writing stuff like the Script things, it’s, well, a challenge. Partly it’s getting the idea into a shape that matches what’s in my head. There’s been a few that haven’t seen the light of day for that reason. There’s enjoyment to be had in getting the character’s voices out there, but sometimes the idea doesn’t land well on the page. If that’s about the concept, the execution, or both, I’m not sure. 😉 But, I guess like walking in heels, you don’t get it right first time and you need to put the hours in. Plus, like trying a new look, sometimes things work and sometimes […]

Script: Rapid

Scene: two people are sat drinking coffee on a park bench. There’s a small dog on an extender lead sniffing nearby. Fiaz: Oh man I needed coffee this morning. Delia: No one makes a cup like Man In An Old Van. Just, try to stick to one a day. I had two last weekend and I swear I could see time slow down. Fiaz: Ha ha. I could do with a bit of extra time. The twins are running me flat out. Delia: It’ll get easier. How old are they now? Fiaz: They’re three next birthday. Delia: It’ll be easier when they turn twenty. Fiaz: Oh, thanks for the encouraging words. How’s the search going to be a motivational speaker? […]
