International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day! This year’s theme is Equal for Equal and you can read about that here.

  • An equal world is an enabled world. How will you help forge a gender equal world?
  • Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.

I believe in equality and the difference it makes to our lives. Not just for the individual so that they are heard and part of something, but in as a team, a workforce, a society; we a richer through our combined and diverse strengths.

As a person who occasionally wanders the world in female garb, but lives and works as a man, I am fascinated by this view of man or woman. I see and hear things that are okay for one group, but not another. How can that be right?

To be out in the world as a woman, for someone raised male, the differences – even to a part time non-passing person like me – are startling. Some guys cut me up as a walk, some talk over me in shops: it seems clear that my male privilege is very much a thing I hang on the door when I put on my dress.

I think on the moments glimpsed and I listen to my wife – well respected in her field – and I wonder how much more she would have achieved if she had the same privilege as me? How much better off as a society would we have been if those barriers went away? I think on how much mental heavy lifting she needs to do to deal with all that and be as awesome as she is. I also look at the world Little Miss is joining and I think it could be better. I wonder how much crap she’s had to push aside already.

We might not change the world overnight, but we can influence things around us. Maybe it’s the beautiful act of kindness: give someone time and a platform to speak. Perhaps the power of listening: simple acts of yes, please continue. I am interested. Challenge those who interrupt: excuse me, but Sarah was just saying… Maybe it’s calling out a company to do better in their advertising that treats people as people, not product.

You can do something. Together we can make a difference.

Go forth and be awesome. #IWD
