Losing to win

Hi,

Another week, another post 🙂

Get on with it, Jones!

Conversation

Last time around you may recall me dithering about – as per 😉 – over Wookieness. The quick answer is we talked about it as a couple. Of course, being a right Nervous Nelly – or Anxiety Andrea? 🤔 – I managed to tie myself up in knots, emotionally speaking. 🙄

Anyhoo, the conversation was along the lines of not wanting to cause upset and embarrassment, rather than seeking permission. Does that make sense?

As ever, the Ever Lovely Mrs J continues her wisdom and wifey loveliness. We talked about how it might help, how most of my leg hair has gone through age, and we laughed that our eyesight is such, we’d probably not notice. True 😁

So, I guess I need to not lose my nerve with shorts this summer.

Beauty Therapy

A few days later it was finally time for my waxing appointment. I say finally as it’s down to my date selection, rather than anything else.

Cue an hour or so of casual conversation, some shared laughter, and leaving happier than when I went in. I’ll take that as a win.

When I walk, my jeans feel different against my legs; when I get dressed, I’m not reminded of ‘ick, hair…’ – and these are positive, validating steps. It’s not about excitement or suchlike, it’s more…. feeling pain free emotionally on this. One less heavy rock to carry.

All of which leads into this research request from Oxford: Does appearance anxiety differ between cisgender individuals and transgender individuals before and after medical transition?

A good question and as I’m not cisgender or transitioning, can I fill this out? 🙂

Yes would be the quick answer, because while I’m mostly okay with who I am, there are some areas – that the survey picks up on – where in not. I think I’m not alone in talking about the discomfort of attending family events in very bloke clothing (formal, plain, full, etc) or having to make peace with the ‘Shrek-tato’ image that looks back at me from the video calls! 😁

Like the leg situation, it’s not unbearable…. but then you can get by with toothache, migraines, a bad back, or depression. Yet like those, why stay in pain? Emotionally or physically.

Perhaps then, as difficult as it can be, I have to choose to be me as best I can, with where I find myself.

And, all in all, if I can get by with that, I’ll take that as a win.

PS: It’s Chams next week and Nicola’s new business, Wigeroo, will be visiting. Very much looking forward to that.

    1. Gah, so many meme references in my head at the mo. 🙂

These are not the pins you should be looking at. You may go about your business 😉

Or, more recently, “This is the way”

  1. Yes, I’ve noticed there’s a whole different feeling when you have dehaired your legs.
Glad to hear that the Conversation worked out well for both of you, and besides if I had legs like that I’d want to show them off.
    xx

    1. Yes, I think I see what you mean, Susie. It might be, a feeling of rightness. Or perhaps, feeling less wrong in my own body.

It’s one less ‘bag of sugar’ to carry around when things are as they should be. Two bags down if you include positive relationship status too.

Gah. I sound like Spock 😁
