Five days. Five full days of the working week, the school run, and some home related faffery. I’ve even tried putting my head on the wireless charging mat, but I’m still not with it yet 🫠
So in an effort to put a break between that and the weekend, I’ve had a haircut (re buzzcut), a tangle with the epilator, and a warm shower. As Lili Von Shtüpp once said: “I feel refweshed” 🙂
Nerd news
The old gaming PC has been messing around of late. The graphics just stopping, the antivirus being overzealous, and the error logs were longer than a 2004 MP’s expenses claim (allegedly 😉)
So, geek goggles on and time to find a spare storage disk (I’m still on SSD rather than the new fancy stuff, NVE or M2). Swap out the old disk, keep that safe, and put in a blank one for the reinstall.

Yeah, so I’ve got Windows 11 on the old disk…. and now the Windows 11 installer is saying “Yeah, this PC isn’t compatible, so ner ner ner”. Well, words to that effect.
Hang on, Windows. I’d just shutdown from running 11, why’ve you got your installer in a twist? 🙄
An hour later, I’ve worked out it was a settings problem for the disk and with that updated, everything was fine from then on. Phew! 🤓
After various updates, some driver installation, and a wee faff with my Skyrim install, everything was sorted.
In fact, things are better than before! The game is running well, my gaming mods have all worked, and it’s almost like having a new machine. Good times! 😎
Daydreaming
On a nerd note, my brain has been enjoying imaginative flights of fancy over the last year. Mostly short scenes in a fantasy setting, but nothing to hold then together as a plot.
Maybe that’s something for a rainy day: type a few up, get them out of my head, and see if anything comes from it.
Nails
The Ever Lovely Mrs J mentioned to me that there’s a new nail system called Holy Gels. Looking at the site, it seems the nails are fixed via lamp and removed using a cuticle stick with almond oil.
Mrs J said she thought I’d be interested (bless her ❤️) in that it might save me time on a Thursday. I’ll be honest and say I’m tempted. My worry would be that given I’m only using them for one night, will they be too hard to remove, and/or messed up by Ol’ Ham Hands here, during the removal? I feel another email to customer enquiries.

I’ve no idea what NVE or M2 are. I’ve barely got over the novelty of a PC that has a 1 TB SDD instead of chunky Seagate SATA disks. Then again, I don’t do gaming so most of the time the PC only needs to be able to keep up with my 5 wpm typing speed, although some days it seems to have a struggle doing that with all the faffing around it does in the background.
Good luck with the flights of fancy. I usually have one or more of these bouncing round the back of my head at any time but few of them every make it to the front, and only one (in my last post) out into the world. When people ask authors ‘Where do you get your ideas?’ they are asking the wrong question. It should really be ‘How do you manage to finish your ideas?’ Apparently the three answers are ‘Write, write and write’.
Are those your comment spams or from other sites? I’d suggest medication but I suspect they are on far too much of it already.
I only know because Wee Man spoke about them before he left home! 🙂 That and the new work laptop has a tiny chip behind the keyboard that’s umpteen gigajibbers* of storage. BTW, that’s a technical term in IT for something large enough, but you’ve no idea what it is 😋
There’s a lot of modern hardware that falls into that category for me now. I couldn’t remember if Wee Man’s old PC had a similar storage chip or if it was old school. I spent a couple of hours trying to understand what the interfaces were, did the computer have one, and if I did put one in, would it help? The answers to all of that are no. At least, not to my reading. There might be some gains in having the storage go straight into the computer’s main bus, rather than the storage channel, but I’m not seeing it on this age of hardware.
FWIW, most of my working life is around the Cloud, so CPUs, RAM, and storage are more vague terms and I’ll freely admit to more informed folk that they will need to explain things to me. So yeah, I was somewhat behind the curve and much Googling was done to work out my options for upgrading. Luckily, the PC – like me! 🧓 – is of an age where it’s very much not cutting edge! So, it was SSDs which I understand and I had some in a draw. Yes, I’m with you on the “Wait, you can get these in multiple terabytes now?” moment too.
I’m sticking with Windows on that device because gaming and modding do push the level of technical faffing. I do not have the inclination to spend time learning all about Linux or similar, because my gaming time is limited. However, the old computer upstairs is too old to be updated to use Windows 11, so I may well wipe it, slap a Linux distro on it and use it for web based stuff.
As to the writing – or not writing in my case – completely agree. The ideas come from all over and from the most random of moments. Being a bit of daydreamer, I tend to keep them in the back of my head too (so to speak). Perhaps if I can stop faffing about with blogging, gaming, and/or Chams related stuff, I could get my act together and do some writing. However, I think the truth of it is the former activies bring me joy in my spare time and I think that’s a good thing.
The spam comments are all from this blog, yes. Luckily the CAPTHCA systems and comment filters keep the vast majority of it out.

If you’re already using W10, it’s not a massive change, IMO. Yes, the Start Menu is altered, but you can tweak that. I think there’s a ‘Classic Shell’ alternative desktop app, if you prefer Windows 7’s look.
My issues with the change is that not all PCs are compatible with 11, and 11 comes with minor ‘crapware’ / bloatware, that must remove nearly straightaway.
Apologies if you’re already aware, and if not there’s always Linux if you want to walk away from MS. If you have a USB stick lying around, you can try it without changing anything on your PC.
Plus, there’s Neverware which puts ChroneOS on, if you want a fast, almost ‘browser only’, and very Google centric experience. Again, that can be tested without installing.
